Because so many games are not much more than hack and slash, many roleplaying games would offer experience points finding peaceful solutions and made sure that experience was for "defeating" an enemy instead of "killing".
Sometimes this leads to a new kind of peace munchkin, who plays a peaceful character ONLY/MOSTLY for the points (or sometimes exclusive abilities).
