I'm a fan of uniting player characters by having something that tries to kill them. It's not subtle but it gives the characters some common ground quickly

A Star Wars RPG player of mine always tried to negotiate with what I threw at the party.
I let it work for their first encounter, much like the encounter here.
But he wouldn't stop after that.
And it always worked, until they met the BBEG, Darth Maremoon.
That player had so many Charisma points, but very little strength, ddexterity, and HP built up. He died, as did the other PCs who were relying on his negotiating skills.
Next game, they immediately made clones with Kaminoan cloning technology and put their Lvl 1 selves in stasis. I let them get away with it. At least I didn't have to approve any new character sheets.

A good negotiator would know when negotiations are going badly and run

...but a cocky negotiator thinks he can recover.
